IBEW Local 494, Staff Electric Code of Excellence Training Raises the Bar

The construction of the new Northwestern Mutual headquarters in downtown Milwaukee has been important to our industry for many reasons. It presented a great opportunity for the Building Trades to enter into a Project Labor Agreement to ensure the highest quality of work on the 32 story tower, and it is also one of the first major projects that requires our trades and contractors to navigate City-imposed workforce development rules that will be attached to all future projects utilizing tax incremental financing options. In addition to these high expectations, IBEW Local 494 and Staff Electric went a step further and decided that the NM project would be an ideal time to implement the Code of Excellence program.

This past month, our industry experienced many highs, lows, and game-changing moments. While it’s easy to let these successes and trials determine our outlook, it is more important than ever that we stay focused on our big picture goals of securing more projects and work for our members. To that end, Building Advantage is working every day with labor and management entities to make these goals a reality.

The 2015 Building Advantage Career Fair is upon us! If you know any high school students or local teachers/school officials looking to learn more about career opportunities in the trades, please send them information about the career fair, or have them contact Melanie Mager at 414-897-1146. This year’s event will be held Tuesday, April 21st from 8:30 am – 2:30pm at the Waukesha Expo Center, and ALL attendees must pre-register.

WRTP/BIG STEP hosts trades at Annual Apprenticeship Awareness Fair

WRTP/BIG STEP held another successful Apprenticeship Awareness Fair on Friday, January 30th, with 72 people attending. These attendees were able to meet with representatives from all of the skilled construction trades to learn more about each individual apprenticeship process and application dates.
