Walbec Group Road Building Recruitment
By: Anna Molinaro
On January 22nd, the Walbec Group will be partnering with WRTP/BIG STEP, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), and the City and County of Racine to bring a recruitment and training event to Racine area residents.
As an increased number of current workers near retirement and the Walbec Group family of companies continues to grow, the challenge to find qualified, and retainable workers will increase in our industry. This event will be used as a way to strengthen their presence and partnership in the Racine area and community to build a diverse pipeline of workers for their company and to share information about the roadbuilding industry with community residents and partners.
Using the Department of Transportation’s Roadbuilding Trans class basic curriculum, Payne & Dolan and Zenith Tech, Inc. are developing a pre-apprenticeship training class specific to the needs of their company. Payne & Dolan and Zenith Tech Area Managers and Superintendents will be on-site conducting interviews and selecting candidates to participate in a 130-hour, non-paid road construction preparation program that helps prepare individuals for work in the heavy highway construction industry. The goal of this program is to connect these entry level candidates to opportunities within their company. They believe that if they, as an employer, are involved and vested from the beginning of the recruitment process, the likelihood of someone being retained by their company increases significantly.
