CG Schmidt constructs award winning Milwaukee Intermodal Station

At the 2009 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards, Eppstein Uhen received an award for the design of the Milwaukee Intermodal Station – which was built by one of Building Advantage’s contractors, C.G. Schmidt. The awards were presented to the architects, building owners and contractors at a special awards ceremony on May 20 at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison. The annual Design Awards program represents the highest recognition given for excellence in architectural design by AIA Wisconsin.

Project information

The interior and exterior renovation project of the Milwaukee Intermodal Station included improvements to three sides of the building such as covering the existing exterior with architectural pre-cast concrete, adding new metal panels and constructing a curtain wall window system. The main entrance of the station was relocated to its west side, and the existing canopy was replaced with a 200-foot-long wave canopy. Site renovations also included an expansion of the existing surface parking lot and landscaping. Interior alterations consisted of new public restroom facilities, a new lobby entrance, new finishes to the waiting area, as well as new administrative offices.

A new unique three-story landmark of steel and glass for new waiting and queuing was added to this gateway to Milwaukee. Extensive renovation inside the building was also undertaken while still maintaining not only a very vital train station but the headquarters for the Marquette Interchange reconstruction. A tight site, difficult soil conditions and a complicated funding structure made this a truly complicated project.
