Union Dominates Top 25 Largest Milwaukee Construction Projects

The Business Journal recently released a listing of the 25 largest Milwaukee-area construction projects currently underway. With costs totaling over $4.8 billion, all of these projects utilize union construction workers.

“Union construction represents the highest standard of excellence and quality in the construction industry, and we continue to prove it with the number of high dollar projects going to union construction,” says John Topp, executive director of Building Advantage.

By working together as a team, union labor and management have been able to win the majority of the top 25 projects in Milwaukee, including many of the projects in which C.G. Schmidt is involved. C.G. Schmidt is the general contractor for six of the top 25 projects, including the $345 million Columbia St. Mary's Hospital project. “It is vital that trades people and management work as a team to promote our industry,” said Mark Schmidt, general superintendent for C.G. Schmidt.

Many of these projects are ongoing through 2008 and 2009, creating a number of steady jobs for union workers. However, there is still much to gain from smaller area projects as well. Trades workers must continue to perform the high-quality level of work that people have come to expect from union construction on all jobs, small or large, in order to maintain and grow our share of the marketplace.
