Educating Students on Careers in the Trades

Building Advantage and the Allied Construction Employers Association (ACEA) held their sixth annual Union-Construction Career Fair on March 18, 2008 at the Waukesha County Expo Center. High schools students and recent graduates who are interested in a career in union construction were invited to attend the event.

The career fair was a huge success with over 600 area high-school students attending from 30 different schools. Representatives of each union trade were on hand to talk with students and answer questions about career opportunities and apprenticeships. Other industry related groups were also represented, including the Building Industry Group Skilled Trades Employment Program (BIG STEP), the Women in Trades organization, Milwaukee Tool, AGC and OSHA.

Students were able to learn about each trade through hands-on demonstrations, as well as talking with on-site trades people. Each student also received an interactive CD with more information on careers in the trades.

The success of the career fair represents a growing interest in the trades by high school students and instructors. The union trades continue to build a strong future for Southeastern Wisconsin, and the next generation of trades people will play a significant role in union construction while setting the highest standard of excellence.
