Top 25 – Union Still on Top

Every year, The Business Journal releases a listing of the 25 largest Milwaukee-area construction projects. Union construction contractors have continued to dominate this list, and in 2009, the result is no different. More than 20 of the largest area construction projects are currently utilizing union construction workers, with costs totaling over $4.8 billion.

“We are all very proud of the work that our members provide to our customers,” said Ken Kraemer, Executive Director of Building Advantage. “When our trades people are involved with some of the highest profile and largest projects, it really showcases the level of work we bring to the jobsite.”

These large union construction projects require a lot of teamwork and are a testament to how hard work and remaining focused on improving management and labor relations favorably impact the industry. Major projects like the Oak Creek Power Plant – which comes in first on the list with a $2.2 billion price tag – are extremely complex and require the cooperation of all involved to run smoothly and efficiently.

In addition to the Oak Creek project, the list included multiple signatory contractors’ projects such as Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, the Potawatomi Bingo Casino expansion, the Harley-Davidson Museum and the Milwaukee City Hall renovation. Knowing what these projects meant to our members, Building Advantage made sure to stop at many of these projects during The Power of One jobsite tour.

Congratulations to the general contractors, sub-contractors and companies who were represented on this list. It really shows that union contractors and trades are the best in the business.
