2011 Career Fair:

Helping to Educate Students

Each spring, Building Advantage hosts a career fair at the Waukesha County Expo Center for area high-school and tech-college students interested in a career in the trades. This year is no exception, and the 16 different unions in our area are ready to show students what a day in the life of a trades person is like. Tuesday, May 3, we will have a chance to show attendees how to weld, paint, hammer, lay brick and more, as well as participate in many other activities throughout the day.

As a group, the building trades have always planned well for the industry's future through multi-million dollar training programs and facilities. Promoting a well-trained workforce and the benefits of a career in the union construction industry helps continue this legacy by educating students who might not be interested in college, but who have the drive and determination to succeed in the trades.

However, finding students who understand what a career in the trades is like can be difficult, and that's why Bruce Follo, an instructor at Brookfield Central, brings his students to the career fair each year.

"I realize how important it is to show each student a variety of different career paths post high school," Follo said. "The career fair does an excellent job of really showcasing the trades, and the students enjoy the hands-on demonstrations. We look forward to this trip every year."

We'll post pictures and updates about the 2011 Building Advantage Career Fair on our Facebook page from now until after the event, so check back often for the latest information.
