We're All Union by Choice

I find that when I'm asked about being part of a union, my answer can help to change people's minds. It won't happen overnight, but in time, people start to understand the differences between the union construction industry and the word "union."

With the latest news stories about unions in Wisconsin and across the country, and the opinions about unions, there's never been a better time for us to tell people how ours works.

When I'm approached about my union involvement, I usually ask the other person whether or not they've ever belonged to a union. Most of the time, their answer is no. I explain to them that our industry has no seniority, sick days, holiday pay or vacation, and our industry self-funds our healthcare, pensions and training. The fact is that we get paid only when we work. Fortunately, this kind of conversation seems to begin changing others' opinions about the union construction industry.

I hope the next time you are asked why you're a union contractor or trades person that you will take the time to explain what our industry has done for you and your family. We should all be proud of the work we do and the careers we have, and hopefully this information will help change people's perceptions.
