Women in Trades

In September 2006, a group of women involved in the construction industry were determined to create an alliance that would "support, energize and empower trades women to successfully contribute to the quality of the skilled workforce." This mission led them to create the Women in Trades organization.

Although organizations that cater to women isn't unique to the industry, bringing a chapter to Wisconsin was long overdue. It is important for the group to honor and support the women who take part in a predominately male industry while being sure to take pride in their work. In addition, preparing women whose goal is to become a trades person is essential to this organization and our industry.

Currently, Women in Trades has over 225 members, and hold meetings in Milwaukee on the third Tuesday of every odd month. Their meetings include: bringing in trades women to talk about their experiences working in the field, discussing apprenticeship instructor's goals when bringing on new apprentices, and highlighting mentoring, safety, harassment and tech-school training programs, to name a few.

Members actively participate in industry-wide events and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Career Fairs and Labor Day activities. At the end of the day, they want to be sure they are giving back in areas where their skills can help people in need or with an interest in joining the trades.

If you're a trades woman and would like to learn more about this organization, or you would like to join the Milwaukee Building & Construction Trades Council, Building Advantage, Payne & Dolan, WRTP/BIG STEP, NECA, NAWIC and the AGC of Greater Milwaukee as a sponsor, please visit womenintradeswi.org or call Donna Eurick at (262) 662-3486.
